- International Yoga Day
The volunteers of NSS unit 35A&B of Baby John Memorial Govt. College Chavara conducted a yoga day program in the college.
The objective of the session is to encourage students and staff to incorporate yoga into their daily routines for overall well-being.
The yoga session started at 9.30 a.m. at the rooftop hall. The yoga was demonstrated by the NSS Program officer Dr.G.Gopakumar.
The session offered a pleasant and warm beginning to the students. Sixty four participants joined the program including the NSS Program officer Dr.Minitha.R and other faculties of the college.
The participants expressed appreciation for the session and the opportunity to learn various yoga techniques.

2. One Day Training Programme on Academic Research Writing
The Department of Zoology, in collaboration with IQAC, organized a one-day training programme on Academic Research Writing at Baby John Memorial Government College, Chavara, Kollam. The event took place on 17th August 2023 (Thursday), starting at 10:00 AM in the College Seminar Hall.
The program aimed to enhance the academic writing skills of participants, focusing on methodologies and best practices in research documentation.
Dr. V.S. Anilkumar, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Botany, BJM Government College, Chavara, served as the guest speaker for the event. The speaker’s experience and insights provided participants with a deeper understanding of the nuances of academic writing.
The event was coordinated by the PG Department of Zoology under the aegis of the NAAC-accredited (B+ Grade) institution. This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to promoting academic excellence and fostering research culture among students and faculty. Sixty students attended the programme.

3. World Suicide Prevention Day
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD),celebrating on 10th September which was
organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP),and co-sponsored by WHO(World Health Organization). The programme was conducted in our college on 11th of September, 2023 and organized by JEEVANI ( Centre for Student’s well being)
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented. The theme of WSPD 2023,was “Creating hope through action”. The overall goal of this day is to raise awareness about suicide prevention worldwide.
Objectives including promoting stakeholder collaboration and self-empowerment to address self–harm and suicide through preventative action. In our college as a part of campaigning poster making competition followed by an exhibition was conducted .Poster making competition was held on the college seminar hall and the exhibition was done on the college front yard.
Participants and the whole student’s were given awareness about suicide prevention day and it’s importance. The student’s, teaching and non-teaching staffs equally participated in the event. 65 posters were made by the NSS volunteers on the theme ‘Creating Hope Through Action’. NSS first-year volunteers Indu A., Thara Thulaseedharan, and Devi Chandana grabbed the first three places respectively. Later the posters were displayed in the college corridor to create awareness among the students on the need for suicide prevention.
Participants appreciated the theme, emphasizing its motivational and proactive approach toward suicide prevention. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to use art as a medium to communicate sensitive issues effectively.
4. Gender Sensitization Programme
On 10 October 2023, Women Cell of the college in association with Kanal, Jeevani, NSS conducted a Gender Sensitization Programme at the college seminar hall.
The programme aims to prepare female college students to thrive in a gender-inclusive environment and contribute to creating a more equitable and respectful society.
Smt. Arathi Mohan, a public speaker and Secretary of THAPAS -NGO for health care, delivered the talk on the topic Gender Equality and Gender Relations. The inaugural function was presided over by Smt.Hemi (Child Development Project Officer, Kollam).Dr. Anitha P (Vice Principal, BJM Govt. College, Chavara), inaugurated the function. The function was felicitated by Smt. Vidya T R (Head, Dept. of Statistics). Welcome speech was delivered by Smt. Arya S Kumar (Gender Specialist, DHEW, Kollam) and Vote of Thanks by Smt. Rajasree R (Assistant Professor, Dept of History).
Smt Arathy Mohan elaborated on the gender specific problems faced by female students within their families and in the society outside. The highly interactive session proved to be thought provoking and imparted valuable insights to the audience. One hundred and twenty one students attended the programme.
The programme was successful in fostering awareness, inspiring action, and equipping female students with tools to navigate gender-related challenges while promoting equality. Students expressed strong interest in similar initiatives in the future.

5.World Mental Health Day Celebration
World mental health day is celebrated on Oct 10.The overall objective of World
Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to
mobilize efforts in support of mental health .The day provide an opportunity for all
stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more
needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide. World
Mental Health Day was celebrated on our college on 10th October 2023 organized by JEEVANI.
The theme of the year was “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right”, to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as a universal human right. As a part of this programme, campaigning was done for the whole college. Selected student’s from different departments (30 students) along with playcards and awareness thoughts covered all classes and given the importance of mental health and conveyed the theme of the day. Jeevani Counsellor, Ms. Rameesa S along with Jeevani Coordinator, Ms. Latha S. Sarma, Assistant Professor of English, BJM Govt. college were part of the campaigning and covered the whole classes with the student’s.
The campaign significantly increased awareness about mental health and its status as universal human right. Students expressed interest in hands-on workshops on stress management, mindfulness, and copies strategies.
6. International Day of the Girl Child
The Gender Justice Club of B.J.M. Government College, Chavara, Kollam, organized an invited talk by Dr. Mini Babu, Head and Associate Professor, Department of English, on the occasion of International Girl Child’s Day. The event, held on October 11, 2023, at the Seminar Hall, witnessed enthusiastic participation from 50 students.
Dr. Mini Babu’s thought-provoking talk, “To a Fairer Future,” focused on the significance of promoting gender equality and empowering girl children to build a more equitable society. The speaker emphasized the importance of creating awareness about the challenges faced by girl children and the need for collective efforts to address these issues. The talk was well-received by the students, who actively participated in the discussion and posed thoughtful questions to Dr. Babu. The event served as a platform for raising awareness about gender justice and promoting a culture of equality and inclusivity within the college community.
The participants felt more aware of the unique challenges of single girl children and the importance of supporting them.

7. Debate on ‘Is Gender Equality Possible’
On October 11, 2023, a spirited debate titled “Is Gender Equality Possible? was organized by the Debate Club and Gender Justice Club. The event took place in the seminar hall and commenced at 02 pm with an engaging talk on gender issues by Dr. Gopakumar G., the Club Coordinator and Associate Professor of Hindi. His talk was enlightening and set the stage for the ensuing debate.
Following the talk, students eagerly prepared to participate in the debate, with two teams, each comprising five members. Mr Gawreesh G. P. Student from IBA English served as the moderator for the session. He provided an initial briefing on the topic and issued instructions to all the participants, ensuring they stayed on topic throughout the debate. He occasionally intervened to maintain the focus of the discussion. The debate was marked by witty and humorous arguments, making the entire session engaging and entertaining for the audience.
Before concluding the event, an open platform for discussion was made available, where students showcased their vibrant, enthusiastic, and critical perspectives. Both teams presented their arguments with respect and professionalism, contributing to a fruitful exchange of ideas.
As a token of appreciation, all the participants were awarded attractive prizes for their active involvement in the debate, encouraging their continued engagement in intellectual discussions. Dr. Santhi U., the club coordinator and Assistant Professor of English, delivered the vote of thanks to conclude the event.
8. Programme on Social Engagement
On 18th December, 2023 a talk on the topic “Understanding Healthy Relationships
with reference to Malayalam Movies” was conducted as part of the social
engagement programme of the Women Cell in association with JEEVANI.
The objective of this programme is to engage students in an interactive discussion about the concept of healthy relationships, using Malayalam movies as a cultural and cinematic reference. The aim is to explore how these films portray relationships, both positive and negative, and to critically analyze the impact of these portrayals on societal perceptions and individual behavior.
The Resource person, Dr. Sandhya J Nair, Assistant Professor, Department of History, University College, Thiruvananthapuram gave a speech on various relationships maintained in society and how different individuals engage with each other and with the society at large, citing examples from Malayalam films. Also examples were chosen to compare and construct types of healthy and unhealthy relationship, familial and societal.
The talk was interactive and contributed very much to the students’ understanding of how
they can engage themselves with their society in a healthy manner. Dr. Yamuna D S,
Coordinator, Women Cell, delivered the Welcome Speech and Vote of Thanks was
delivered by Smt. Rajasree R, Assistant Professor, Department of History. Thirty eight students attended the programme.
Several participants mentioned that the programme helped them become more mindful of the red flags in unhealthy relationships, both in films and in real life.
9. Motor Vehicle Awareness Programme & Training
NSS Unit No 35 A & B of Baby John Memorial Government College in collaboration with ministry of youth affairs and sports along with Nehru Yuva Kendra and Motor vehicle department and RTO enforcement Kollam organized a motor vehicle awareness and training programme on 20-01-2024.
The objective of the programme is to educate young adults about the importance of road safety and to instill responsible road usage habits. This programme aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the roads safely, reducing the risk of accidents and promoting safe driving and pedestrian behavior.
A session was conducted for making the students aware of road safety measures and the need for awareness by the resource person Shri. Shajimon S, Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector, Regional Transport Office (Enforcement), Kollam. A rally was also conducted from Sankaramangalam junction to our College. Sixty five students were participated the programme.
The students appreciated how the rally made the topic more relatable and highlighted key issues like reckless driving, speeding, and pedestrian safety.
10. Menstrual Cup Awareness Programme and Distribution
A Menstrual Cup Awareness Programme was conducted by the Women Cell in
association with the Community Health Centre, Chavara and Block Panchayath,
Chavara on February 16, 2024 at the college seminar hall.
The main objectives of the programme are to emphasize how menstrual cups can offer greater comfort, longer protection, and fewer health risks compared to other menstrual products and to teach students how to use, clean, and maintain a menstrual cup to ensure safety, hygiene, and long-term effectiveness.
Dr. Thanuja (Medical Officer, Community Health Centre , Chavara) delivered
a talk on personal hygiene and the need for using menstrual cups as an alternative to
sanitary pads and cloths for better hygiene, personal and environmental. Dr Bhavya
(Medical Consultant, Hindustan Latex Ltd) elaborated on how to use menstrual cups
in the proper manner. Both the sessions were interactive. Towards the end of the
programme menstrual cups were distributed to the female students of the college
free of cost. 98 students attended the classes and 400 students received the
menstrual cup.
The programme was well-received by students, with a majority expressing that they found it informative, empowering, and impactful. Many students appreciated the opportunity to learn about menstrual cups as an alternative to traditional products.
11. Orientation Programme for Student Innovators
An Orientation Programme for Student Innovators organized by the Young Innovators Programme (YIP) in association with K-DISC, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the Entrepreneurship Development (ED) Club, and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) was held at the College Seminar Hall on 19-02-2024.
The programme aimed to introduce students to the various opportunities available for innovation and entrepreneurship. The session focused on providing guidance on how to turn creative ideas into viable projects and the role of innovation in societal development.
Mr. Justin B, the District Coordinator of K-DISC, Kollam, served as the resource person for the programme. He has vast experience in guiding student innovators and helping them convert their ideas into successful projects. His insights on the innovation ecosystem, government support, and mentorship programs were highly appreciated by the participants. Mr. Justin B gave a comprehensive overview of innovation and its significance in today’s world. The speaker detailed the role of K-DISC in promoting innovation at the district level, outlining available resources and opportunities for young innovators. Student Engagement: The session included interactive discussions where students were encouraged to share their ideas and thoughts on innovation.
Information on government schemes, mentorship programs, and funding options for student innovators was shared, motivating the students to take their ideas forward.
The programme was attended by 75 students from various disciplines.
The orientation programme was successful in motivating and informing students about the importance of innovation and the resources available to them. The students left the session with a deeper understanding of how to develop their ideas and how various organizations, like K-DISC, can support them in their entrepreneurial journey.

12. Workshop on Time & Stress Management
Women cell in association with Jeevani & IQAC conducted a Workshop on “TIME &STRESS MANAGEMENT” on 12th March,2024 at college seminar hall.
The goal of the workshop is to equip students with practical skills to manage time and stress effectively, ensuring they can navigate the challenges of college life while maintaining their health and academic success.
The Jeevani Psychologist Smt. Rameesa conducted the class. The role of time in our daily life was discussed, how time and stress are related was the major focus of the class. Exam anxiety and exam stress reducing tips were given and relaxation technique was demonstrated.
Women cell coordinator welcomed the crowd and the resource person and vote of thankswas delivered by Ms. Vidhya, HOD of Statistics. The workshop was attended by 100 students.
The programme was well-received by students, with a majority expressing that they found it informative, empowering, and impactful.
13. Entrepreneurial Motivation Program-2024
The Department of Industries and Commerce, Govt of Kerala has formulated a scheme to set Entrepreneurship Development Clubs (ED Clubs) in schools and colleges of the state , providing necessary seed money for setting up the EDC and annual grant to ensure its working. The main objective of the Entrepreneurship Club is to create and develop new entrepreneurs from college students.
An awareness class and motivational session was conducted on 13/03/2024 by the renowned psychologist Shri Sureshkumar, Corporate Trainer, Motivational speaker and Counselling Psychologist. The psychologist was very successful in imparting the skills, techniques and confidence necessary to act as prudent and successful entrepreneurs of the future.
The motivational class was inaugurated by the HOD of English Dr. Minibabu. The coordinator of ED Club Smt. Devina S welcomed the audience which comprised of students of B.Com and teachers from various departments. She outlined the importance and necessity of an ED Club in colleges. The ED Club organises various programmes to inculcate integrity, hardwork, discipline, honesty, and make students aware of the unlimited development potential of the state and inculcate entrepreneurial culture in the students. Dr. Sreevidya P V, HOD of Commerce Department also gave a brief outline of the ED Club and its activities.
Shri Sureshkumar was successful in imparting entrepreneurship qualities to nurture the latent entrepreneurial talent and to develop awareness among the students of the attitudes, values, and skills of successful entrepreneurs around the globe. 62 students have attended the session.

14. Psychological Talk on ‘ Holistic Wellness: From Hole to Whole’
JEEVANI (Centre for student’s well being) conducted a mental health awareness programme ‘ Holistic Wellness: From Hole to Whole’ on 14th March 2024, Thursday on college seminar hall.
The programme mainly focused on dealing with the importance of mental well being of college students. The promotion of good mental health, effects and influence of drugs in college campus, substance abuse, anti social behaviour, different types of stressors faced by college student’s and relationship breakup impacts were the main concerns of the student’s.
The function starts with a silent prayer followed by the welcome speech of Jeevani coordinator Latha.S,Sarma and thereafter the resource person continued the class. The resource person of the programme was Dr. Fresnal Das, Assistant professor Department of Psychology, Fatima Mata National College, Kollam.
The common issues faced by the college student’s mainly like anxiety, depression ,exam fear, suicidal ideation, personality disorders, peer group pressure, family problems, relationship breakup impact were addressed. The programme was very much informative and interesting thereafter vote of talks was initiated by Jeevani Counsellor Rameesa. Fifty Eight participants attended the programme.
The participants highly appreciated the insightful content of the program.
15. Orientation Programme on standard writing & Standard Writing Competition
An orientation programme on standard writing was organized by the Standards Club in collaboration with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at the college seminar hall on 14-03-2024
The programme aimed to engage students in understanding the importance of standard writing and to encourage their participation in writing contests. The session was designed to introduce students to various writing techniques and help them enhance their writing skills.
The resource person for the session was Mr. Muhammed Shafi, Standard Promotion Consultant, Bureau of Indian Standards, Kochi, who is an expert in writing and communication skills. Mr. Muhammed Shafi, provided valuable insights into the fundamentals of standard writing, including structure, grammar, and clarity of expression.
The session began with a detailed introduction to the principles of standard writing. Students were briefed on the importance of adhering to proper writing formats, clarity, and effective communication. Following the orientation, a writing competition was held, where participants were asked to write on a given topic. This was a practical session aimed at applying the concepts learned during the orientation.
The students were actively engaged during the programme, with interactive discussions and tips from the resource person on how to improve writing skills. 60 students attended the programme. Twelve students showcased exemplary performance in the writing competition.
The orientation programme and standard writing competition successfully helped students improve their writing abilities and understand the key elements of standard writing. The event concluded with a sense of achievement among the participants, who were motivated to continue enhancing their writing skills
16. Screening Documentary – Period. End of Sentence
The Women Cell unit of B J M Govt College, Chavara screened the Oscar winning
documentary titled Period. End of Sentence, on 21 March 2024 at Audio Visual room of the College.
The objective of the documentary is to foster awareness and facilitate discussion on the given topic.
Directed by Rayka Zebtachi, the documentary in Hindi demonstrates the story of the rural women in a north Indian village of how they overcome the centuries old stigma surrounding menstruation and learn to manufacture sanitary pads, which in turn lead to their economic empowerment.
The session was handled by Dr. Yamuna, Associate Professor of English and the Women Cell coordinator of the college Twenty students attended the programme.
The participants expressed interest in more such screenings in the future.
17. Workshop on The Art and Craft of Poetry
The poetry workshop, conducted by the Department of English, BJM Govt. College, Chavara, Kollam, was a resounding success. Held on 22nd March 2024, 10.30 am at College Seminar hall, the workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from 75 students.
The workshop was led by acclaimed poet Annie George, who shared her insights and expertise on the art of poetry. The interactive session provided students with a unique opportunity to explore their creative expression and hone their poetic skills. The event was a testament to the college’s commitment to fostering literary talent and promoting a culture of creativity among its students. A handwritten magazine was made by the Students of English club. N P Rajendran an erudite scholar and former Head and Associate Professor, Dept. of English, BJM Govt. college inaugurated the Magazine.
